His father, Stan Lee Broza, worked in radio. He was one of the people who started WCAU in Philadelphia.

WCAU was an affiliate of CBS network.

In the early 1930s, his father had a well-known children’s radio show called the Horn & Hardart Children’s Hour.

In New York in the 1940s, WCAU broadcasted ‘The Children’s Hour’.

WCAU had adopted the talented children including Buddy DeFranco for the Horn & Hardart  Children’s Hour.

When he was 10, he got up in front of the band and conduct.

Two years later, he started a small rehearsal band in his home.

Buddy DeFranco and his older brother Leonard were in the band.
