Yesterday I confirmed the later years of Ziggy Elman.

Unfortunately he had been economically deprived of music life by heart attack in 1956.

He economically distressed.

Meanwhile, a male vocalist who participated in the recording of “And the Angels Sing, has become a co-founder of Capitol Records.

In addition one of the students who taught trumpet in later years has become the founder of A & M Records.

I thought his achievement was not appreciated in Japan.

So I would like to post about his footprints.

Ziggy Elman joined Benny Goodman band in September 1936.

Also Harry James joined Goodman in January 1937.

In those days Harry James and Ziggy Elman and the third trumpeter, Chris Griffin were nicknamed “The Biting Brass.”

Gordon Jenkins’ works(4) Goodbye

November 11.2017

Photo above of Gordon Jenkins with Nat King Cole by courtesy of the Jenkins family

Gordon Jenkins composed “Goodbye” in the early 1930s.

Unfortunately Isham Jones did not adopt the song because “Goodbye” was too sad.

Then Gordon Jenkins had become friendly with Benny Goodman.

When Goodman’s band was hired by NBC in 1934, Benny needed a closing theme on radio program.

So Jenkins wrote the score for Benny’s closing theme.

I will summarize ”In Search of Gordon Jenkins”.

Gordon originally wrote “Goodbye” to his first wife who died on the operating table giving birth to his first child. The baby also died.

それ故この曲は「I’ll Never Forget You」で始まリます。

Gordon Jenkins’ works (1) Blue Prelude

November 07.2017

Last month I posted that Gordon Jenkins had arranged for the Isham Jones band.

Gordon Jenkins was involved in “Blue Prelude.”

Please listen to the famous song “Blue Prelude”.

Photo from The Big Band by George T.Simon

Gordon Jenkins was hired by the Isham Jones Orchestra in 1932 as staff arranger.

In those days Saxophonist Joe Bishop had written a composition entitled “Blue Prelude”.

Also Joe Bishop and Woody Herman composed “Woodchopper’s Ball” .

The Casa Loma Orchestra first recorded “Blue Prelude” in early 1933.

Isham Jones was not happy that another band had found success with a tune written by one of his sidemen.

So Isham Jones quickly decided to record his own version and instructed Gordon Jenkins to supplement “Blue Prelude”.

Then “Blue Prelude” has become a standard piece of popular music.

Mildred Bailey and Her Alley Cats “with Bunny Berigan”

I am interested in the recordings of Mildred Bailey and Her Alley Cats.

So I want to post about the background of this recording.

John Hammond was contracted by Parlophone Records to produce a series of American jazz performances that were to be released in Great Britain.

Photo by courtesy of Frank Driggs Collection
Hammond at a recording session with Buck Clayton, Lester Young, Charlie Christian, Benny Goodman and Count Basie.

Hammond assembled Teddy Wilson,Grachan Moncur, Johnny Hodges and Bunny Berigan for Mildred Bailey.

Berigan and Hodges had never performed together as front-line men before this session.

These four tracks-twit jazz standards and two blues.

“Downhearted Blues,” is a well-known tune that had been Bessie Smith’s first issued recording.

In 1941, the American Decca record company reissued them as part of a six record set entitled “Gems of Jazz.”

Bud Freeman And His Windy City Five

Mildred Bailey and Her Alley Cats    4曲

Bunny Berigan And His Blue Boys 4曲

上記においてMildred Bailey and Her Alley Cats

Mildred Bailey and Her Alley Catsの録音について調べてみました。
