Boyd Raeburn and Ginnie Powell(3)

December 22. 2017

After George Handy left for Hollywood film work,Raeburn hired Ralph Flanagan and Johnny Richards as arranger of successor.

At That time it was a rewarding band for that young talented arranger.

According to the discography by Tom Lord,I confirmed that many arranger are participating in the Boyd Raeburn band .

George Handy(ジョージ・ハンディー)がハリウッド映画の仕事のために楽団を退団したので、後任のアレンジャーとしてRalph Flanagan(ラルフ・フラナガン)とJohnny Richards(ジョニー・リチャーズ)が雇われました。

Last week I introduced Bruce Raeburn who is the curator of the Hogan Jazz Archive.

This week I would like to post about his father Boyd Raeburn.

Also I will introduce Ginnie powell who was the singer of his band.

Stan Kenton orchestra and June Christy at the Palladium. 1946. Photographer: Gene Lester.

Boyd Raeburn band is not as popular as Stan Kenton and Woody Herman.

Many years ago a wonderful album of Boyd Raeburn was on sale in Japan.

I have owned “The progressive Big Band.”

Please listen to the first tune included in this record first.

SICILY JASS “The World’s First Man in Jazz”(5)

December 16. 2017

The director Michele Cinque used an interview tapes by Nick Larocca.

In the movie, Bruce Raeburn talks about Nick’s achievement in the office of Hogan Jazz Archive.

Because Nick donated his musical heritage to Tulane University’s William Ranson Hogan Jazz Archive.

Jazz Archives has 2,844 LaRocca collections including photos, letters, scrapbooks, interview materials, advertisements, movies, records, posters, contracts and affidavits.

About Hogan Jazz Archive,Please refer to this website. Go here

「Hogan Jazz Archive」

映画上映会後にFrancesco Cafiso(フランチェスコ・カフィーソ)の演奏会が開催されました。

Isham Jones’ compositions(4) “You’ve Got Me Crying Again”

October 06,2017

“You’ve Got Me Crying Again”   was written by Isham Jones, with lyrics by Charles Newman, and was published in 1933.

Elsie Carlisle had sang this song from early period.

She was a popular English female singer both before and during the British dance band era of the 1920s and 1930s.

Fortunately I found the video that she sang to “You’ve Got Me Crying Again”.

Hal McKusick was born in Medford Massachusetts, June 1924.

He became a saxophone player in several big bands in the 1940s and and early 1950s in bands like Boyd Raeburn, Claude Thornhill and Elliot Lawrence.

Also his close colleagues were George Russell, Art Farmer, Bill Evans and Jimmy Guiffre.

In 1955 he formed his own quartet, featuring himself on the alto saxophone, Barry Galbraith on guitar, Milt Hinton on bass and Osie Johnson on drums.

He recorded four albums at his own quartet.

(4)Jazz On The Academy(Coral CRL-57116 Nov. 3, 1956)

These recordings were important because he experimented with a quartet without a piano.

Their sound was like Gerry Mulligan’s pianoless quartet.

In addition he adopted a proficient arrangers like Manny Albam or Al Cohn.

About his achievement I recomend reading JazzWax’s terrific intervew. Go here
