ハロルド・アーレンという作曲家に特別な興味を持ったこともない身ですが、彼の「It’s Only a Paper Moon」は、ナット・キング・コールの歌唱で好きな曲の一つでした。ナットの中でも飛び切りの名盤とされる「After Midnight」(1956年8月録音)での歌唱と1963年に2度目の来日を果たし、赤坂のニュー・ラテン・クォーターで原信夫率いるシャープス& フラッツと共演した際のライブ盤を聴き比べてお楽しみください。アルバム付属の解説のお陰で、曲の初演(1953年ブロードウェー)当時の曲名は「If you believe in me」だったという豆知識も得ました。
