Toots Thielemans as guitarist(3)

August 25. 2017

In 1951 Toots Thielemans  immigrated to the United States.

He worked with Charlie Parker, Dick Hyman and many other musicians.

From 1953 to 1959 he played with George Shearing.

Photo above in the 1950s, from left, Bobbejan Schoepen, George Shearing, Toots Thielemans and singer Joe Williams

When  George Shearing signed with Capitol, they recorded together on most of Shearing’s Capitol sessions.

Also Thielemans was making a name for himself as a leader.

In 1957, he signed with Riverside label.

Photo above of Orrin Keepnews by courtesy of Alchetron

Orrin Keepnews produced an ingenious pairing by Thielemans and  baritone saxophonist Pepper Adams.

Thielemans and Adams had swing and a driving playing style in common.

Then Thielemans recorded most superb 1950s albums—Time Out for Toots, on Decca.

Unfortunately I could not hear his guitar on this recordings.

Probably it seems that guitar solos in this album are Barry Galbraith  and Johnny Pizzarelli.

In 1959 he recorded with Ray Bryant Trio on Signature label.

1959年、Ray Bryant TrioをバックにSignature社に「The Soul Of Toots」をレコーディングしています。

Today I would like to post about his activities until Toots Thielemans immigrated to the USA.

After the war he heard bebop style jazz records by Parker and Gillespie.

In those days he was making a name for himself as a guitarist in local jazz clubs and dance halls.

His first professional performances were with Benny Goodman’s band when they toured Europe in 1949.

When Thielemans visited the USA in 1948,an agent of Benny Goodman heard him play at a small New York music club.

After he returned to his home in Belgium, he received a letter inviting him to join Goodman’s tour in Europe.

He also accompanied Benny Goodman European tour the following year.

When Benny Goodman and his band had concerts in Rome,he and Benny Goodman went to see the performances of Django Reinhardt.

Also he joined a jam session in Paris with Sidney Bechet, Charlie Parker, Miles Davis, Max Roach and others in 1949.

During those years, he also made his first record with fellow band member.

The band name was “The Belgian Hot Club Quartet.”

We can listen to his early recordings on the double album,”Yesterday & Today”.

Please refer to the website.  Go here

In April 23,1950, Toots Thielemans Quartet recorded “I can’t Get Started” and ”How High The Moon” at Gazell label in Stockholm.

TOOTS THIELEMANS(g and harmonica),Jimmy Woode(p), Simon Brehm(b),Jack Norén(ds)

Unfortunately we can’t listen Gazell label.

In November 23,1950, Toots Thielemans Trio recorded four tunes at Metronome in Stockholm.

1950年4月23日、Toots Thielemans QuartetはストックホルムのGazellレーベルで「I can’t Get Started」と「How High The Moon」を録音しました。
TOOTS THIELEMANS(g and harmonicaJim),Jimmy Woode(p)Simon Brehm(b)Jack Norén(ds)

Lester Young at Philo label(4)

July 3.2017

I was listening to Philo’s recordings with my collection, which is “Nat King Cole meets the Master Saxes” by Spotlite Records.

Spotlite Records is a British jazz record company and label.

It was founded in 1968 by producer Tony Williams, originally as an outlet for Charlie Parker’s Dial recordings.

Also I have an interesting material for this recording.

It is “jazz solography series” by Jan Evensmo.

Please see below my images.

「Nat King Cole meets the Master Saxes」

Chubby Jackson(3)

May 24,2017

In the mid-1940’s, Chubby Jackson first sympathized with  innovative jazz “Be Bop” .

Woody Herman disbanded “First Herd” in 1946.

Chubby Jackson began to work with the saxophonist Charlie Ventura.

Photo above of Charlie Ventura and Billy Bauer and Chubby Jackson by courtesy of Jazz Guitar’s Hidden Giant

Charlie Ventura formed a fine quintet with vibraphonist Terry Gibbs and trumpeter Conte Candoli and pianist Lou Levy.

Charlie Ventura band toured Scandinavia in 1947.

Chubby Jackson talks about the impression in Sweden.

“I visited clubs, dance halls, and met most of Sweden’s top musicians. Younger or old, all wanted to learn the secret of playing bebop! They dig Charlie Parker and Dizzy back! Such interest in bebop I have never seen in America. They face it exactly for what it is—a new phase of jazz.”

After returning from Scandinavia, Chubby Jackson led his own small group.

Young musicians excluding Charlie Venura became “Fifth Dimension Jazz Group” with Chubby Jackson.

In 1948 he rejoined Herman in 1948 as young musicians like Stan Getz and Zoot Sims were coming up through the band.

Woody Hermann ”First Herd”
