After he worked with Benny Goodman’s band, he joined Stan Kenton’s orchestra.

In those days Stan Kenton was looking for a featured trombonist.

The trombone section didn’t have an identifiable sound until that time.

Kai Winding gave it the unique sound that remained with the orchestra.

Pete Rugolo wrote some terrific arrangements for trombone section.

In addition the leader employed excellent talents such as Eddie Safranski and Vido Musso and Shelly Manne  at that time.

Their sound had been leading to a permanent change in the Kenton sound.

When Kenton broke up in 1946, Kai decided to play with Charlie Ventura’s jazz combo.

Again after 18 months he left Charlie Ventura and joined Woody Herman for a short period.

Then he moved to the 52nd Street area.

He formed his own combos which included Brew Moore and George Wallington.

When Chubby Jackson led a studio big band,he had his first sessions with J.J. Johnson.

Kai Winding

Chubby Jackson(4)

May 25.2017

In 1951 Chubby Jackson joined Ventura’s Big four with Buddy Rich and Phil Napoleon.

Then he moved to Chicago with his family in 1953.

He worked as a studio musician, freelanced, and hosted some local children’s TV shows from 1955.

He became the host of a local children’s show on which he led a big band.

So he played a bass with a big, smiling face painted on it, told jokes and introduced Little Rascals shorts.

I do not know about “The Little Rascals” because I have never seen this TV show in Japan.

Also he reformed his own big band in Chicago and made two classic LP albums for the Argo label.

In 1957 he called out to the former members of the Woody Harman Orchestra and jazz and musician colleagues.

They made two albums “Chubby’s Back” and “I’m Entitled To You”.

Chubby’s swingy performance was also a pleasant feeling.

Last year JazzWax wrote an article about the work ” I’m Entitled To You “.

1957年、Woody Harman時代の同僚達にレコーデイングに参加するよう呼びかけ「Chubby’s Back」と「You’re Entitled To You」を発売しました。
昨年私が愛読しているJazzWaxが「You’re Entitled To You」について詳細な記事を書いています。

In the mid-1940’s, Chubby Jackson first sympathized with  innovative jazz “Be Bop” .

Woody Herman disbanded “First Herd” in 1946.

Chubby Jackson began to work with the saxophonist Charlie Ventura.

Charlie Ventura formed a fine quintet with vibraphonist Terry Gibbs and trumpeter Conte Candoli and pianist Lou Levy.

Charlie Ventura band toured Scandinavia in 1947.

Chubby Jackson talks about the impression in Sweden.

“I visited clubs, dance halls, and met most of Sweden’s top musicians. Younger or old, all wanted to learn the secret of playing bebop! They dig Charlie Parker and Dizzy back! Such interest in bebop I have never seen in America. They face it exactly for what it is—a new phase of jazz.”

After returning from Scandinavia, Chubby Jackson led his own small group.

Young musicians excluding Charlie Venura became “Fifth Dimension Jazz Group” with Chubby Jackson.

In 1948 he rejoined Herman in 1948 as young musicians like Stan Getz and Zoot Sims were coming up through the band.

Woody Hermann ”First Herd”

Gene Norman was elected into the Hall of Fame of the American Association of Independent Music in 1991.

He died on November 2. He was 93.

I want to introduce “A CHARLIE VENTURA CONCERT” as his best contribution to jazz again.

Gene Norman produced Charlie Ventura’s “Bop for the People” concert in Pasadena, Calif., in May 1949.

This work was one of the most significant and electrifying bop band performances of the late 1940s.

He continued to put on big concerts, and produced a series of live albums and studio recordings based around his promotions.

Today I want to write a little about Charlie Ventura and Jackie Cain and Roy Kral.

When Gene Krupa reformed his band in June 1944 Krupa recruited Charlie Ventura.

In 1948 Charlie Ventura organised the small band.

His band was associated with “Bop For The People.”

Jackie Cain and Roy Kral were singing with Charlie Ventura band in 1948 and 1949.

The Pasadena Concert actually was their last concert with the band.

Jackie Cain and Roy Kral left from Charlie Ventura’s band.

The Ventura band was pretty popular in the 1950s.

Tomorrow I will post about their concert live recordings.

Here is Gene Krupa and his Orchestra with Charlie Ventura in 1947.

He played tenor sax in the white suspenders.
