Nat Hentoff died on on Jan. 7 at his home in Manhattan. He was 91.Go here

I will post about “Mating Call” from the consideration of Nat Hentoff.

I referred to JazzWax[August 21, 2007].

He wrote a review about “Mating Call” in 1957.

“Why a trumpet wasn’t added remains a mystery”.

Hentoff wished there had been an extra horn on the date, and he mused “a gentler trumpet”.

This recording had been subject to discussion among critics as Ira Gitler points out in the liner notes.

After the death of Clifford Brown in June 1956, Blue Note label was recording more aggressive sound with joining young superior trumpeters such as Lee Morgan and Donald Byrd.

Also Bob Weinstock produced Miles Davis for a marathon recording session at the end of November 1956.

Producer Bob Weinstock had envisioned the date as a quintet session including trumpeter.

However Tadd Dameron had rejected Weinstock’s plan.

I guess Tadd wanted to record without trumpeter.

After all this session was recorded without a trumpet player.

Arranging with one horn alone was marvelous.

The early Swedish Jazz(3)

Unknown

Stan Getz played a folk song in Stockholm in 1951.

This song was named ‘Dear Old Stockholm’ and became modern jazz masterpiece.

Although departing from the main theme I want to mention about his bad habit.

When he visited in Sweden, he received a hero’s welcome.

There was no heroin anywhere for him.

Young Swedish players did not know about the prevalence of narcotics on the American jazz scene.

So he hoped to be clean like them.

I guess he decided to quit a narcotics in Sweden.

I summarized from his biography.Go here

When Lionel Hampton’s band had toured Europe in 1953,Clifford Brown and Quincy Jones

and other members recorded with Arne Domnerus and Lars Gullin and Bent Hallberg.

Quincy Jones(3)

In the fall of 1953, Hampton’s band left for a tour of Europe .

Lionel Hampton instructed the band of his rule against making records on the sidemen.

Because musician wanted to earn extra cash and a name for themselves during their job.

Also band leader was the risk of losing his biggest stars if member’s record became hit.

Lionel Hampton had hired a security guard in their lodging.

Security guard was placed in the lobby of their Paris hotel to prevent his member from escaping.

Though Clifford Brown and Quincy Jones left their room from a rear bedroom window.

In spite of Hampton’s direction, Brown, Jones, Farmer, Gryce, trombonist Jimmy Cleveland and alto saxophonist Anthony Ortega slipped out of their hotel in Stockholm and Paris to record with local jazz musicians.

When they were not blessed with the opportunity to record in USA,
they had been leaving historical recording in Europe.

Joy Spring

I purchased this record in high school.

This piece was composed by Clifford Brown in 1954.

The lyrics was vocalized by Jon Hendricks afterward.

In 1957 Jon Hendricks teamed with Dave Lambert and Annie Ross.

They were formed the legendary vocal trio.

The style of Manhattan Transfer inherited from Lambert, Hendricks & Ross.

Manhattan Transfer had revived this song as “Sing Joy Spring”.

Currently, I am paying attention to this female singer.

This work is also good to hear by guitar playing.

I Can Dream, Can’t I?

February 10.2016

Yesterday’s post, Carpenters song was good for me.

I tried to look for other musicians about this tune.

I Can Dream, Can’t I?‘ was published in 1937 and Tommy Dorsey released a hit recording of it the same year.

The best-known version was recorded by ‘The Andrews Sister’ on July 15, 1949.

‘Joni James’ recorded a version for her 1959 album 100 Strings and Joni.
