The Dave Brubeck Quartet in Europe

July 20.2017

MUS-157

Louis Armstrong and Dizzy Gillespie had made earlier tours as the Jazz Ambassadors.

From March to May in 1958, the Dave Brubeck Quartet embarked on an ambitious tour of Europe and Asia that was sponsored by the U.S. State Department.

This tour was part of a “cultural ambassador” program in which the U.S. government sent prominent American musicians abroad to promote American arts and culture during the Cold War.

They had a concert tour in Iran, Iraq, Afghanistan, Pakistan, Turkey and Sri Lanka, among other countries.

Then he got tickets and visas for his quartet to travel through East Germany to Poland.

In Poland, they were among the first U.S. jazz musicians to perform behind the Iron Curtain.

No one from the State Department was there to help him.

The Dave Brubeck Quartet in Europe is a live album  in 1958 in Copenhagen, Denmark.

I think “Tangerine” by Paul Desmond is best performance.

Also there is special memory for me in this record.

About 30 years ago I purchased this record from a man named Nick Sedelnik at NY ‘s free market.

Nick was a really nice guy and his name was stamped on the bottom right of the commentary.

If someone knows Nick Sedelnik, please contact me.

Dave Brubeck Quartet
Nick Sedelnik
Nick Sedelnik

Benny Goodman in Moscow

July 17.2017

Last week I went to a Jazz bar in Umeda in Osaka city.

The master likes Russia and I heard an interesting story about Moscow from him.

Recently I saw the documentary film when Benny Goodman visited to Moscow.

So l would like to post about Benny Goodman’s tours in Moscow.

In 1956, the US State Department created the Jazz Ambassadors program, hiring

leading American Jazz musicians such as Louis Armstrong, Dizzy Gillespie,

Benny Goodman, and Duke Ellington to be “ambassadors” for the United States overseas.

Benny Goodman was probably the world’s best-known jazz musician.

So he traveled the world as Musical Ambassador of Good Will for the United States.

In those days The Times said that some people felt Duke Ellington should have been the first American jazz band to make an official tour of Russia.

In 1962, Benny Goodman embarked on a tour of the USSR with a top-notch big band.

He assembled many superior musicians as sideman.

Tomorrow I would like to post about “Jazz mission to Moscow”.

Louis Armstrong, Dizzy Gillespie, Benny Goodman, Duke Ellington

Melba Liston(4)

June 16.2017

Melba Liston had a particularly difficult time when she went on a Southern tour with Billie Holiday.

Southern racism was rife and the crowds were sparse.

After returning her home, she put her trombone down.

She took a desk job at the Los Angeles School Board and won some small movie roles.

She said of this experience:

“I had a long thing with Lana Turner and walked around behind her playing a harp in The Prodigal (1955) and was a member of the palace orchestra in The Ten Commandments. “

In 1956 Melba Liston returned to playing her trombone in Dizzy Gillespie’s orchestra commissioned by the U.S. State Department as a musical ambassador of the U.S. in South America.

She wrote and arranged many of her most memorable tunes during her work with Dizzy’s ambassador orchestra including “Stella By Starlight,” “My Reverie,” and “The Gypsy.”

In 1958, Melba Liston recorded her only album as a leader, “Melba Liston and Her ‘Bones” – a true gem in jazz history.

At the end of the 1950s, Liston joined up with Quincy Jones’ big band as it headed over to Europe.

Liston played trombone, soloed, and contributed both charts and original compositions to Jones’ orchestra.

Also she arranged and conducted the bassist Charles Mingus 1962 Town Hall Concert.

この時「Stella By Starlight」「My Reverie」「The Gypsy」など記憶に残る編曲をDizzy Gillespieオーケストラに提供しました。

Melba ’s teacher Alma Hightower ran a big band made up of children from the neighbourhood.

Naturally Melba Liston was also participating in the a big band.

Then she decided to become a professional musician and joined the musicians union.

At 16,she became a member of the band of the Los Angeles Lincoln Theater.

Also she began composing and arranging for other acts performing at Lincoln Theater.

By the 1940s Liston was getting some of her earliest chances to prove herself in Los Angeles’ thriving jazz scene.

In 1943 she joined Gerald Wilson’s progressive big-band.

She recorded one of her her early compositions, “Warm Mood,” with Gerald Wilson’s orchestra.

From L to R, Melba Liston, Charles Fox, Chuck Thompson, Ross Russell and Dexter Gordon

Also she was invited to make a recording with Dexter Gordon who was a former classmate.

She soloed on a tune that Dexter dedicated to her called “Mischievous Lady”.

In 1948 she joined Dizzy Gillespie’s big band.

Melba enjoyed working in this exciting band full of talented artists.

Unfortunately Gillespie disbanded the group only a year later.

Then she and her former bandleader Gerald Wilson toured with Billie Holiday in the South in 1950.

In the mid-1940’s, Chubby Jackson first sympathized with  innovative jazz “Be Bop” .

Woody Herman disbanded “First Herd” in 1946.

Chubby Jackson began to work with the saxophonist Charlie Ventura.

Charlie Ventura formed a fine quintet with vibraphonist Terry Gibbs and trumpeter Conte Candoli and pianist Lou Levy.

Charlie Ventura band toured Scandinavia in 1947.

Chubby Jackson talks about the impression in Sweden.

“I visited clubs, dance halls, and met most of Sweden’s top musicians. Younger or old, all wanted to learn the secret of playing bebop! They dig Charlie Parker and Dizzy back! Such interest in bebop I have never seen in America. They face it exactly for what it is—a new phase of jazz.”

After returning from Scandinavia, Chubby Jackson led his own small group.

Young musicians excluding Charlie Venura became “Fifth Dimension Jazz Group” with Chubby Jackson.

In 1948 he rejoined Herman in 1948 as young musicians like Stan Getz and Zoot Sims were coming up through the band.

Woody Hermann ”First Herd”

In 1973 He was a founding member and co-director of the innovative musical ensemble Irakere.

The group blended Cuban folkloric elements with indigenous Cuban and West African rhythms.

Irakere became a musical laboratory, where innovations in both Afro-Cuban jazz and Cuban popular dance music were created.

So they signed with an American record label.

Together with the band, D’Rivera toured throughout the world and became a top-rated jazz ensemble.

In 1979, the group joined with American jazz and rock performers for a music festival.

Please refer to the terrific article about “Irakere”. Go here  (ここに記事を添付しています)

In 1981, D’Rivera defected from Cuba and moved to the United States.

In 1988, he joined the United Nation Orchestra with a 15-piece ensemble organized by Dizzy Gillespie.

Dizzy Gillespie showed the fusion of Latin and Caribbean influences with jazz.

I guess Dizzy Gillespie is the master of Paquito D’Rivera.

He has played “I remember Diz” many times.

Fortunately he met  Eddie Condon in New York.

Hackett soon became a crucial member in Condon’s band and made numerous recordings in his studio bands.

In late 1942, Bobby took a studio job with NBC and became active in organizing the Condon Town Hall Concerts.

Their performance was broadcasted and recorded by Milt Gabler (Commodore Records).

He also continued to play at Condon’s and other clubs in the New York area.

After a year at NBC, he joined Glen Gray’s Casa Loma Orchestra where he remained until 1946.

Then he participated in numerous recording sessions with such as Jack Teagarden, Teddy Wilson, Eddie Condon, Vic Dickenson, Louis Armstrong, Dizzy Gillespie.

As a remarkable achievement of this period,he played and directed for Louis Armstrong’s Town Hall Concert in May 1947.

During 1949-51 he played with Red Allen and Lee Wiley in New Jersey.

Bobby Hackett and Joe Bushkin joined Lee Wiley’s famous recording “Night in Manhattan” in Columbia label.
