On radio broadcasting Sadao(渡辺貞夫) said also he frequented in “Connolly’s.”

In Boston’s 1950s jazz scene, many jazz greats performed at nightclubs such as the High Hat and the Savoy and Wall’s Paradise.

The Savoy’s owners, brothers Steve and Jim Connolly(1906-1984) sold their club in 1955.

Then Steve Connolly opened the “Blue Moon”.

Jim Connolly obtained an irish bar known as Murray’s Cafe.

Jim managed the irish bar as a night club with live music entertainment.

Also the nightclub was named ”Connolly’s”.

In those days the High Hat or George Wein’s Storyville were commercially jazz spot.

However ”Connolly’s” developed a loyal clientele of jazz musicians and enthusiasts.

Here I want to introduce one great “Cinderella” story in Connolly’s.

I found the name of Alan Dawson who was prominent drummer and had played at Connolly’s.

In 1957 he began an eighteen-year association at the Berklee College of Music.

As noteworthy thing Alan Dawson was the teacher of Tony Williams.

So Tony became a local rhythm section at Connolly’s, when he was 16.

In December 1962 Jackie McLean went to play a gig in Boston with a local rhythm section.

Jackie McLean was writing an encounter with Tony Williams on liner notes.

Please refer to the liner notes on Jackie McLean’s album “One Step Beyond(1963)”.
