“F” label was established by Osateru Fujii in Kasahara-cho in Gifu prefecture in Japan.

This label was using an Internet mail order system as a main sales method.

However the independent label has produced all good charming jazz.

”What’s New at F” by Eddie Gomez and Jeremy Steig was the representative work.

I found his interview article in a musical instrument magazine of Japan. Go here

I quoted his speaking.

「ジャズフルートを学んでいる学生にメッセージを」と聞くと、「ジャズをお金のためにやっていると考えているなら、今すぐやめたほうが良い。それだけだ」

He was asked  a message to student who are learning the jazz flute.

”If you are considered to be doing jazz for money, it is better to quit right now. That’s it. ”

Jeremy Steig was born September 23, 1942 in Manhattan.

At age 19 he was involved in a motorcycle accident which left him paralyzed on one side.

So he created a mouthpiece out of cardboard and tape.

Most jazz flutists are saxophonists who double on the instrument.

However he played only flute.

When he was 21 he recorded his first album, “Flute Fever”.

It was produced by John Hammond and released by Columbia in 1963.

Two jazz musicians died in Japan in this year.

“Sir Charles Thompson” and “Jeremy Steig.”

I want to post jazz musician who loved Japan this week.

Sir Charles Thompson died June 16 in a hospital near Tokyo. He was 98.

He was born in Springfield, Ohio, on March 21, 1918.

His father was a Methodist minister, on church assignments.

Then their family settled in Colorado Springs and he began to train as a pianist at about age 6.

He mostly learned by listening to jazz records and was soon earning good wages at house parties.

Bennie Moten’s Kansas City Orchestra

In 1930 the Bennie Moten jazz band with Count Basie came to Colorado Springs.

Count Basie summoned him up on stage during a break( he was only 12).

Also he met Buck Clayton in Parsons, Kansas.

So I guess he became more likely to play with Basie’s members on his musical life.
