Lorenz Hart(5) 〜‘I didn’t know what time it was’

May 06.2016

Lorenz Hart was well known the gay.

But Hart’s lyrics avoided references to homosexuality.

Around this time he looked at his future pessimistic, and had drunk wine every day.

Richard Rogers had always cared about his health.

Unfortunately their relationship had to be desolved for his death.

Lorenz Hart(3) 〜’Thou Swell’

May 04.2016

‘Thou Swell’ was written by Richard Rodgers, with words by Lorenz Hart in 1927.

Thou swell, thou witty, thou sweet, thou grand
Wouldst kiss me pretty, would hold my hand
Both thine eyes are cute too, what they do to me
Hear me holler, I choose a sweet lollapaloosa in thee

I’d feel so rich in a hut for two
Two rooms, a kitchen, I’m sure would do
Give me not a lot of just a plot of land
And thou swell, thou witty, thou grand

Thou swell, thou witty, thou sweet, thou grand
Wouldst kiss me pretty, would hold my hand
Hear me holler, I choose a sweet lollapaloosa in thee

Well, I’d feel so rich in a hut for two
Two rooms and a kitchen I’m sure would do
Give me not a lot of just a plot of land
And thou swell, thou witty and thou sweet, thou pretty
Thou swell, thou sweet, thou witty, thou grand

‘Words and Music (1948)’ was produced by MGM.

June Allyson sings and dances to ‘Thou Swell’ with twin “knights”.

Bix Beiderbecke joined the hugely popular Paul Whiteman Orchestra in the late 1920s.

He recorded ‘Thou Swell’ with Paul Whiteman Orchestra April 1928.

Lorenz Hart(2) 〜’It Never Entered My Mind’

May 03.2016

“It Never Entered My Mind” is a show tune from musical Higher and Higher (1940).

Once I laughed when I heard you saying
that I’d be playing solitaire,
uneasy in my easy chair.
It never entered my mind.

Once you told me I was mistaken,
that I’d awaken with the sun
and order orange juice for one.
It never entered my mind.

You have what I lack myself
and now I even have to scratch my back myself.

Once you warned me that if you scorned me
I’d sing the maiden’s prayer again
and wish that you were there again
to get into my hair again.
It never entered my mind.

At Columbia University he and Richard Rodgers began to write songs for a series of amateur and student productions.

Rodgers and Hart subsequently wrote the music and lyrics for 26 Broadway musicals during a more than 20 year partnership.

Next time, I want to post about my favorite songs.
