Lord Nelson and His Boppers

June 5.2018

Milt JacksonとSonny Stittが共演した「In The Beginning 」

同社は創業時にはJohn Lee Hooker(G-201),B.B. King(G-202),Little Johnny Taylor(G-203)などR&Bの作品を発売していました。

TOM LORD Discographyによると上記8曲(1948年6月録音)は「 Lord Nelson and His Boppers」となっています。

Lord Nelson

復帰後の録音は「Jay Johnson ‘s Boppers New York」

Gil Fuller(2)

October 19,2017

After Fats Navarro left Billy Eckstine band ,Fats and Kenny Dorham joined small-group session under the leadership of Kenny Clarke.

Then Fats Navarro and Kenny Dorham recorded a historical performance on September 5 1946 on Victor label.

They were named Kenny Clarke and his 52nd Street Boys.

Next day(September 6) they recorded on Savoy label as The Be Bop Boys.

Also The Be Bop Boys was named Gil Fuller’s Modernists.

Common members of two days were Kenny Dorham, Fats Navarro, Sonny Stitt, Bud Powell, Kenny Clarke.

Noteworthy, Gil Fuller was included as arranger on both sessions.

Also Savoy label instructed a long recording time.

Four tunes cut a greater length than an usual recording.

Because these were recorded at double length for release over two sides of a 78 rpm disc.

In 1949 Gil Fuller recorded his leader recordings on Discovery label.

Unfortunately after that, he has not produced his own album until 1965.

Kenny Clarke and his 52nd Street Boys

On broadcast Sadao Watanabe(渡辺貞夫)  choised two tunes,“Cool Blues and Laura” from “Bird in Boston by Charlie Parker.”

The performances were recorded at the Hi-Hat Club in Boston.

Sadao said that he didn’t know the Hi-Hat Club.

Because it closed in March of 1959 after a fire destroyed the building.

The Hi-Hat Club had been opened among the jazz clubs of Boston s South End district, at the corner of Columbus and Massachusetts Avenue.

Performers included Sammy Davis Jr, Duke Ellington, BB King, Sonny Stitt, Miles Davis, Billie Holliday, and many others.

It prospered from the mid 1940s until 1959.

In those days it was the only club featuring a consistent policy of presenting modern jazz.

Between 1953 and 1954 Charlie Parker made several visits to Boston.

He had played often with local musicians at the Hi-Hat.

Also the Savoy Club located at 410 Massachusetts Avenue.

When Roy Haynes was 15 years old, he started to play at the Savoy.

Because he was born in the Roxbury section of Boston, Massachusetts(March 13, 1925).

Not only Tadd Dameron composed “If You Could See Me Now” for Sarah Vaughan, but he also did the orchestral arrangement.

Sarah Vaughan’s 1946 original recording was released through Musicraft Records.

This tune became one of her signature songs.

In 1998 her rendition was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame.

Also this tune was embraced by jazz instrumentalists and vocalists alike.

As with most of Dameron’s compositions, it has been recorded by many jazz musician and vocalists.

“Misty is a beautiful song. It’s very much a ballad in the tradition of great jazz
writers like Tadd Dameron. Misty is in some ways a cousin of Dameron’s If You Could See Me Now.”Here is Sarah Vaughan sings “If you could see me now”(May 7, 1946),

The Roost label was founded in 1949.

From 1950 until 1958 Roost label was run by Jack Hooke and Teddy Reig.

Teddy Reig produced jazz legend’s records such as Bud Powell, Johnny Smith and Stan Getz.

Don Schlitten(3)

Today I post about Cobblestone label and Muse Records.

Both labels were founded in New York City by Joe Fields in 1972.

Joe Fields worked as an executive for Prestige Records in the 1960s.

Joe Fields set up the Cobblestone label with the help of Don Schlitten.

Don Schlitten produced a couple of Sonny Stitt’s finest sessions, ‘Tune Up’ and’ Constellation’.

In addition he produced six live records at the 1972 Newport Jazz Festival.Go here
