「Gerry Mulligan」

Dardanelle Breckenridge

February 20.2018

Dardanelle Breckenridge was a pianist, vibraphonist and vocalist.

Her real name was Marcia Marie Mullen who was born n Avalon, Mississippi on Dec. 27, 1917.

She gave herself the name Dardanelle in the early stages of her career.

During the 1940s she led a jazz group (unusual for a woman at that time) known as the Dardanelle Trio.

The trio made a lot of good records during that period and also became a regular fixture at New York’s Copacabana.

Then Dardanelle had relocated to Chicago and paused the music activities for her childcare.

By the 1970s, after relocating to the East Coast she formed a new trio.

It was the beginning of two decades of successful activities that included working with pros like Bucky Pizzarelli and George Duvivier.

She eventually retired to Mississippi, where she continued to entertain fans from time to time until her death at age 79 in 1997.

Talmage Farlow(2)

January 8.2018

Photo above of Lenny Breau Emily by courtesy of Pinterst

Tal Farlow and director Lorenzo DeStefano wanted a meeting between the veteran and a rising star.

They made a request for Emily Remler as a co-star.

Unfortunately she could not appear.

So Lenny Breau played with Tal Farlow on film.

Tal and Breau spent time conversing for performance in Farlow’s New Jersey home.

Then they moved to “The Sign of the Times”, a small nightclub in the tiny town of Rumson.

This gig was their first and only performance together.

Because the young guitarist died under mysterious circumstances on August 5,1984.

By the way Emily Remler died of heart failure May 4, 1990 at the age of 32.

Talmage Farlow(1)

January 7.2018

Recently, I watched “Talmage Farlow” by website.

“Talmage Farlow” was produced by Lorenzo DeStefano as a documentary on jazz guitarist Tal Farlow in 1981.

Photo above of Lorenzo DeStefano(left) by courtesy of the portland Press Herald

This film is featuring Tal’s footages and interviews of Lenny Breau, George Benson, Tommy Flanagan, Red Mitchell, Red Norvo, and Jimmy Lyon.

Last year I learned an interesting fact about this film.

”Initially, we considered Emily Remler here ,but she wasn’t available, and then Tal suggested Lenny Breau.”
(Lorenzo DeStefano ,conversation with Jean-Luc Katchoura,August 2011.from p184)

Three great guitarists in jazz history

January 10.2016

Tal Farlow was one of the great guitar player in jazz history.

He was famous as the three major guitar player with the Charlie Christian and Freddie Green.
He was blessed with economically a jazz man.
It was a rare thing in the jazz world.
He had retired for several years.
He came back in 1969.

His distinction was a deep sound and a refined improvisation.

Let’s listen to the Tal Farlow while reading a ‘樽春雄’ commentary.

I was learned some records of jazz guitar from “Mr. Kobayashi” in my student days.

He was writing on jazz magazine at pseudonym of “TaruHaruo(樽春雄)”

Last year, fortunately I purchased this book.It is a great book.

I was reminded “TaruHaruo(樽春雄)” after a long time.
The following sentences it was excerpted from the introduction of the Amazon.
 ”TAL FARLOW
« Un accord parfait / A life in jazz Guitar » is the first illustrated biography of the great jazz guitar player Tal Farlow, who died in 1998, wrote by Jean-Luc Katchoura with Michele Farlow, Tal’s widow. This biography includes many never published photos from the guitarist’s private collection – More than 400 illustrations including 150 photos never published. Tal Farlow, ever the reluctant star, was, nevertheless, one of the best guitarists in the history of jazz. Charlie Christian and Art Tatum were his early influences, but later meetings with Charlie Parker, Dizzy Gilespie and Bud Powell, brought him firmly into the bebop fold. There, he developed his own very personal style. Though a self-taugh guitarist, he was nonetheless an exceptional virtuoso, endowed with a great sense of harmony and an unlimited melodic imagination. These talents secured his place as one of the seminal guitarists of the 20th century. This biography also includes a CD of recorded interviews by the artist as well as tracks whim him playing at home with fellow guitarist and close friend, Jimmy Raney and bassist, Red Mitchell. On other tracks, Tal plays with friends : Gene Bertoncini and Jack Wilkins. The book: Tal Farlow – Un accord parfait, A Life in Jazz Guitar, Published by Paris Jazz Corner Edition in France – 2014 – First Print. Bilingual biography (English /French), 344 pages.”

Red Norvo

January 07.2016

IMG_1485
I  post a favorite record of Red Norvo.
This record was unique existence in jazz history.

(1) Construction of instrument was unique.

(2) Unique style was a soft swing and a cool bop. Also it was still in the    cocktail lounge style.

(3) Reader appointed a rookie as band member.Tal Farlow and Charlie Mingus.

I love the “Mingus” in this period.
His performance was a phenomenal technique and dynamic playing.
