Teri Thornton

Teri Thornton was born September 1, 1934 in Detroit, Michigan

Her original name was Shirley Enid Avery.

She began performing in local jazz clubs in the ’50s.

After Moving to New York in ’60s, she recorded her successful work ‘Devil May Care’ with efficient musicians.
The impressive lineup was Clark Terry, Freddie Wynton Kelly, Sam Jones, Jimmy Cobb and arranger Norman Simmons.

Ella Fitzgerald told Down Beat magazine that Teri Thornton was her favorite singer.
Sadly Teri Thornton was diagnosed with cancer in 1998.
She underwent radiation and chemotherapy treatments.
But she had restored by her indomitable spirit.
At that  time she decided to compete in the Thelonious Monk competition in Washington.
She won the Thelonious Monk International Jazz Competition in the Vocal category.

Verve Records signed her, and she made an album called ”I’ll Be Easy to Find.’’

Unfortunately May 2, 2000,she died in New Jersey. She was 65.

Sadly Teri Thornton died of the disease in 2000.
