Ralph Sharon(4)

In 1957, Ralph Sharon took on the duties of pianist and bandleader for singer Tony Bennett.

Sharon had never even heard of Tony Bennett when the singer invited him to audition as his accompanist.

Also he took American citizenship in 1958 and worked with Bennett for nearly 50 years.

Sharon and Bennett performed together all over the world.

It was a fantastic partnership that produced some of the most popular songs of the era.

Ralph Sharon(1)

Yesterday, I went to the jazz regular meeting in Kobe, where I introduced “Tony Sings for Two “by Tony Bennett.

Because I love Ralph Sharon’s piano accompaniment.

So this week I would like to confirm his footprints until Ralph Sharon becomes a pianist of Tony Bennett.

Ralph Simon Sharon was born September 17,1923 in London and died March 31, 2015 in Boulder in Colorado.

His mother was American, and she used to be a professional pianist.

She used to play piano for the films in theatres in New York.

Then she got married with Englishman, and emigrated in London.

Naturally,he began to study piano with her.

But he did not enjoy playing the piano and he wouldn’t practise until he was around thirteen.

In those days he started hearing jazz records such as Fats Waller and Art Tatum.

He said;”That all changed when I began listening to American jazz records”.

So he started going to some London jazz clubs and hanging out with professional musicians.

Then he started playing with little local bands, just around the Bethnal Green area.

私は愛聴盤である「Tony Sings for Two」by Tony Bennett.

Ralph Simon Sharon

Bobby Hackett(5)

January 27.2017

During the 1950s and ’60s, Hackett toured a great deal with Louis Armstrong, Benny Goodman and Tony Bennett.

It was noteworthy that Bobby made several “mood music” recordings in those days

He recorded his own name 10 albums for Capitol label during the period of 1953 to 1959.

Also He began to join Jackie Gleason’s Easy Listening albums for Capitol label.

As a result his mellow sound enhanced world-wide reputation.

In fact Bobby Hackett first met Jackie Gleason in 1942.

At the time Gleason told Hackett that he wanted to record his smooth cornet playing with a string section.

A decade later Gleason realized his dream with Bobby Hackett.

Eventually Bobby Hackett became the pioneer of Easy Listening.

His mellow sound would been brought some supermarket and department store shoppers, diners, elevator riders, doctors’ office visitors comfort.

Please refer to JazzWax for his recordings on Capitol label.Go here
