Lorenz Hart(3) 〜’Thou Swell’

May 04.2016

‘Thou Swell’ was written by Richard Rodgers, with words by Lorenz Hart in 1927.

Thou swell, thou witty, thou sweet, thou grand
Wouldst kiss me pretty, would hold my hand
Both thine eyes are cute too, what they do to me
Hear me holler, I choose a sweet lollapaloosa in thee

I’d feel so rich in a hut for two
Two rooms, a kitchen, I’m sure would do
Give me not a lot of just a plot of land
And thou swell, thou witty, thou grand

Thou swell, thou witty, thou sweet, thou grand
Wouldst kiss me pretty, would hold my hand
Hear me holler, I choose a sweet lollapaloosa in thee

Well, I’d feel so rich in a hut for two
Two rooms and a kitchen I’m sure would do
Give me not a lot of just a plot of land
And thou swell, thou witty and thou sweet, thou pretty
Thou swell, thou sweet, thou witty, thou grand

‘Words and Music (1948)’ was produced by MGM.

June Allyson sings and dances to ‘Thou Swell’ with twin “knights”.

Bix Beiderbecke joined the hugely popular Paul Whiteman Orchestra in the late 1920s.

I want post in detail at a later date about his achievements.

But for me he had recording an impressive tune.

My guess is that Toshiko Akiyoshi quoted from his tone of as Japanese atmosphere when she produced ‘(孤軍)Kogun’ in her first orchestra recording.

The name of tune was ‘To Taiho’ which had been contained in ‘A Jazz Portrait of Charlie Mariano’.

This song was dedicated to ’Taiho(大鵬)’ who was the grand champion of sumo wrestling in Japan.

His intro sound had replicated the calling voice of sumo wrestling.

I want to express in Japanese.

「ひがーしー、かしーわど。かしーわーど。にーしー、たいほー。たいほー。」

Charlie Mariano (as); Marvin Stamm (tp); Jaki Byard (p); Richard Davis (b); Albert Heath (ds)

Recorded in New York City, July 25 & 26, 1963

My mother’s parents had managed a wholesaling medicine in Osaka.

They had deal with Awamura clinic at Asashiobashi in Osaka.

My mother’s young brother was the sales staff of his clinic.

Some years ago, I asked to my uncle about Doctor Awamura.

My uncle said:”he was in quiet doctor, and he always read a foreign book.”

Awamura clinic was closed ,then my uncle had not met with the doctor.

When I was high school, I have heard his voice from late-night jazz program in FM Osaka.

I rememberd Mr.Awamura’s voice was small, but I can not remember the content of the program.

Because I was a jazz beginner, I could not understand content of the program.

His record commentary statement has been supported from the avid jazz fan even now.

He had a strict opinion on jazz record of Japan.

Below, please enjoy the ’Awamura tune’ [粟村節].
“I can not praise the value of this work, because I do not interest the work of jazzman of Japan.

If we discusse a Jazz on a global level,I admire only Toshiko Akiyoshi.

From a long time ago and even now,’she is a woman with guts ‘.”

“Even at the point in time in 1972,the author is stubborn jazz fan.

Accordingly,I can not evaluate jazz record of Japan.

I listened Joe Bushukin and Buck Clayton for the first time in a long time.

I increasingly the decision to stick to hold my opinions.”
