Red Nichols(レッド・ニコルス)の名前は伝記映画「五つの銅貨」で有名ですが、トランペット奏者としての評価は芳しくありません。

最近のジャズ誌ではレッド・ニコルスについて記載されることがなく古い書物からの引用になりますが一読願います。

「彼自体のプレイはお義理にもホットといえないお寂しいものであった」

「ニコルスの吹奏は、より明瞭で流麗でさえある。だが、感受性とイマジネーションの点では到底ビックスの敵ではなかったのであった」

1920年代の巨星ビックス・バイダーベックと比べるのは可哀想だと思います。

レッド・ニコルスはPhil Napoleon(フィル・ナポレオン)と並び1920年代のジャズシーンでは「ニューヨーク・スタイル」と称され、「シカゴ派」とは異なった演奏スタイルで大衆に人気がありました。

Phil Napoleonについては詳しく聞いておりませんので、名前の列記に留めるのみにさせて頂きます。

レッド・ニコルスの人気については面白い事例がありました。

「1928年、プリンストン大学のジャズファンにレコード・コレクションの内容についてアンケートを求めた結果アームストロングのレコードを持っていたのは1人で、しかも1枚だったという。彼等が愛聴していたのは、白人バンドの「カリフォルニア・ランブラーズ」「レッド・アンド・ミフズ・ストンパーズ」が大部分を占め、(中略)ハーレムの黒人ジャズなどまるで聞かれていなかったわけだ。」

今回はEddie Lang(エディ・ラング)と共演した小編成の録音(1926年3月、11月)を除いたTHE RED HEADSの演奏をお楽しみ下さい。

In 1951 Chubby Jackson joined Ventura’s Big four with Buddy Rich and Phil Napoleon.

Then he moved to Chicago with his family in 1953.

He worked as a studio musician, freelanced, and hosted some local children’s TV shows from 1955.

He became the host of a local children’s show on which he led a big band.

So he played a bass with a big, smiling face painted on it, told jokes and introduced Little Rascals shorts.

I do not know about “The Little Rascals” because I have never seen this TV show in Japan.

Also he reformed his own big band in Chicago and made two classic LP albums for the Argo label.

In 1957 he called out to the former members of the Woody Harman Orchestra and jazz and musician colleagues.

They made two albums “Chubby’s Back” and “I’m Entitled To You”.

Chubby’s swingy performance was also a pleasant feeling.

1953年、Jackson一家はシカゴに移りスタジオミュージシャンとして生計を立てていました。
1955年、地元の子供向けテレビ番組制作に携わりました。
この番組ではビッグバンドを率い、笑顔でベースを持ちジョークを飛ばしながら演奏したそうです。
私は日本で「The Little Rascals」を見たことがないので、詳しいことは書くことが出来ません。
雰囲気的には「犬塚弘さん,世志凡太さん」を想像します。
ジャズに話を戻します。Argoレーベルから2枚のアルバムを制作しました。
1957年、Woody Harman時代の同僚達にレコーデイングに参加するよう呼びかけ「Chubby’s Back」と「You’re Entitled To You」を発売しました。
ビッグバンドでのChubby Jacksonのベースワークは相変わらず心地良いです。
