特集「中間派テナー、バディー・テイト、ドン・バイアス、ラッキー・トンプソンの名演』

(1)ドン・バイアス(1912~1972)
オクラホマ州出身、1937年にニューヨークに進出し、各バンドを経て1940年にカウント・ベイシー楽団に入ります。その後、ミントンズ・プレイハウスでビバップの洗礼を受けます。1946年に、ドン・レッドマン楽団で渡欧した後、そのままパリに拠点を移します。ジャズメッセンジャ ーズの一員として来日経験があります。

(2)ラッキー・トンプソン (1924~2005)
サウスカロライナ州出身、1943年にニューヨークに進出。カウントベイシー楽団に参加します。1946年のパーカーのダイアルセッションや、マイルスの「ウオーキン」、ミルト・ジャク ソンとのサヴォイ・セッションは有名。1956年に、パリに移住し、その後は、米国と行っ 来たりします。70年代にフュージョン系の作品を吹込みますが、やがて大学で指導するも音楽界から離れ、ホームレス生活やアルツハイマー病を患ったりします。全盛期は1950年代で、レスター ・ヤングとホーキンスのいい所を合わせたテナーだと思います。

(3) バディー・テイト(1913~2001)
テキサス州出身、ハーシャル・エヴァンスが急逝した後、カウント・ペイシー楽団に1948年まで10年間在籍します。その後は、ハーレムのナイトクラブ「セレブリティ・クラブ」のホストバンドの仕事を1970年代初めまでつとめます。1960年代は少しかったるい吹込みもありましたが、1970年代から晩年まで、好調を持続して豪快なテナーを聴かせてくれました。

僚友アル・グレイとの楽しい演奏です。

三人の共通項は、カウント・ベイシー楽団に所属していたこと。ヨーロッパで活躍したこと。スイ ング時代からモダンジャズにかけてのいわゆる「中間派」(ドン・バイアスは自分は違うぞと言うで しょうが)を代表する黒人のテナー奏者であること。今回、一括りで紹介するのは、時間的に無理がありましたが、楽しんでもらえれば幸いです。
