秘かに愛聴していたクラリネット奏者が逝きました。Sol Yaged(ソル・エイジド)と言い、 1966年の映画「ベニーグッドマン物語」で音楽監修も務めた根っからのグッドマン信奉者で、主にNYのナイトクラブで活躍した人です。1993年に初めて渡米した際に買ったシェイバー ス名義CDの「WE DIG COLE」、が出会いでした。その後、アメリカの通販サイト「DISCOGS」 でSolのLP音源を見つけ、今年になって何枚かを入手。そんな中での訃報でした。アメリ カは広いな、知られざる名手も多いのだろうなというのが実感です。ちなみに、彼の晩年のバンドで歌っていたという日本人女性からは、彼の名を「サル・イヤーゴ」と呼んでいたと教えられたこともありますが…。

普段はリズムをキープして、演奏の下支えの役割を果たすベース。 今回は、そんな縁の下を支えるベーシストに着目します。(と言っても、前に出てきて弾 きまくるベーシストも出てきますが。)

映像がございませんので、小生(平野)が以前ブログに記載したエピソードを紹介します。

マイルスが上記自伝でポール・チェンバースについて興味ある発言をしています。

翻訳せず引用します。(酒と女の話です)

Anyway, on this trip to Rochester, Paul is drinking zombies. I ask him, “Why do you drink shit like that? Why you drink so much, Paul?”
And he says, “Aw, man, I can drink all I want. I can drink ten of these and it wouldn’t bother me.”
”Drink ‘em and I’ll pay for them,” I told him. And he said, “Okay”.
The only downer for me, really, during this entire first trip was that Paul Chambers was staying with Bird’s ex-wife, Doris Sydnor, in her hotel room at the Sutherland Hotel. So he kept her to himself while we were there. I think he was a little disappointed that I didn’t like Doris, though. He probably figured she was a catch, a feather in his cap, being Bird’s former old lady.

ジャズ喫茶「bird/ 56」で聞いたレコード

お店のマッチを撮影

先日、FB友人のT村さんが「男前は、誰だ？」というテーマで3枚のCD写真を投稿されていました。

3枚のアルバム写真を添付しました。

T村さんはFB友人のM庭さんと意見が一致しコンテ・カンドリ(Conte Candoli)が「1番男前」であるとされました。

*Stan Leveyはプロレスに出演していたほどの猛者らしいです。(JazzWax情報)

『閑話休題』

私がコンテ・カンドリ(モード盤)を初めて聞いた時と場所を確認しました。

当時大阪では「あのレコードはミナミのbird/56にある」「あの廃盤は兎我野町JoJoにある」というような噂話をよく聞いたものです。

「bird/56」は現在でも「道頓堀中座(1999年10月閉鎖)」裏の中和ディキシービル3階で営業されています。

FB友人お二人の楽しい会話を拝見し、久し振りに「bird/56」に行ってみたくなりました。

近くの松竹座で「十月大歌舞伎」を観劇してから行こうかなと考えています。
