おやまぁあんたまで!!「歌いたがり屋」列伝　　解説 吉瀬 拓雄氏　(2015年4月12日)

今回は「歌いたがり屋のジャズ奏者たちが大集合です。ジャズのレコード録音は1917年、白人バンドの0DJBが始まりと されますが、その前年に女性歌手マリオン・ハリス、さらに遡る1911年にラグタイム キングと呼ばれたジーン・グリーンが残した歌声もあるそうです。とはいえ、ヴォーカ ルをジャズの主要なパートに押し上げたのは1920年代半ばにホット5を結成したル イ・アームストロングの功績でしょう。その影響は、ビング・クロスビーら多くの歌手にとどまらず、器楽奏者たちにも歌う楽しさ(快感)を教えてしまったのでした。

(2) BUNNY BERIGAN

学生バンド時代にハル・ケンプに見出されて欧州ツアーに参加。ポール・ホワ イトマン、ベニー・グッドマン楽団にも所属し独立。36年のメトロノーム誌人 気投票で首位。40年にはトミー・ドーシー楽団に加わったが、33歳で早世。

(3) ROY ELDRIDGE

1930年代半ばから活躍し、40年には白人ビッグバンド最初の黒人レギュラーと してジーン・クルーパ楽団に迎えられた。その後アーティー・ショウ楽団、JA TP、グッドマンの欧州ツアーにも参加。これは自己パンド時代の演奏で、メンパーにサヒブ・シーハブの名も。歌題は「恥ずかしくないかい?」でしょうか。

20歳前にジョン・カービー楽団に入り、大半の編曲を手がけたといわれる才人。 トミー・ドーシーやグッドマン楽団にも参加。多くの録音を残したレイ・ブライ アントトリオとのアルバム「Digs Dixie」から自作曲を。グリークスはペテンの俗語?

5) DIZZY GILLESPIE
ビバップやラテンリズムの導入でモダンジャズの功績者と讃えられる一方、テ ディ・ヒル、キャブ・キャロウエイら所属楽団のボスや仲間と衝突を繰り返した という。MJQメンバーも彼の楽団にいた。クインテットの演奏で、ビル・グラハ ム(as)、ウイントン・ケリー(p)、ボニー・グリッグス(b), アル・ジョーンズ (d)。(他にナット・アダレイ、クラーク・テリーも歌っているようです)

(6) TYREE GLENN

べニー・カーター楽団などを経てキャブ・キャロウエイ、デューク・エリントン楽団へヴァイブ奏者との二足のわらじで活躍。歌の方もトロンボーンと同様、 楽しさがあふれます。クインテットのメンバーは、メリー・オズボーン(g)、トミー・フラナガン(p)、チャーリー・ポッター(b)、ジョー・ジョーンズ (d)。
歌うサックス奏者は少なく、他にソニー・スティット、トランバウアー、古谷充ぐらい

(7) GERRY MULLIGAN
ピアノレスのカルテットなど、意欲的試みでウエストコーストから新風を吹か せたあのマリガンが歌ってます。フュージョンのデーヴ・グルーシンと組んだ 全曲自作のアルバム。ジェイ・レオンハート(b)、バディ・ウイリアムス (a)。

ピアニストで歌っているのはホーギー・カーマイケル、マット・デニスといった作曲家系と弾き語りトリオの元祖ナット・キング・コールは割愛して、次の2人を

(8) OSCAR PETERSON

 

ナット・コールとの約束で歌を封印したと言われるピーターソンが、その前に 吹き込んだアルバム「Romance」の1曲。ナットの死後もリスペクト盤を1枚出しただけでした。バックはバーニー・ケッセル(g)と、レイ・ブラウン(b)。

カンザスシティ・ジャズ時代を知るベテランの復活第2弾。ジェリー・マリガ ン(bs)、ハービー・マン (fl)、ジョン・スコフィールド(g)、ジョー・モレ ロ(d)、ジャック・シックス(b)というメンバーを得て気持ちよく歌い、弾いて います。前に聴いてもらったマリガン 94年の同曲はこれの完成形でしょうか。

Tell Me(1966)
ピアノ弾きが歌うなら俺だって、とジミー・スミスも歌います。バックのメ ンバーは不詳ですが、彼にはもう1枚ジョニー・ペイト楽団をバックにした歌入りアルバム「The Other Side Of Jimmy Smith」もあるそうです。当日選曲された「Tell Me」の音源の代替としてYouTube映像をご覧下さい。

( 11)BUDDY RICH
リッチ・ヴォイスといろアルバムのタイトル通り、なかなかのいい声でいい歌いっぷり。バックはハル・ムーニー楽団。もう1枚ある「Just Sing」では、 ベン・ウェブスターやハリー・エディソンらをバックに歌っています。
(ドラマーではグラディ・テイトも歌っているそうですが…)

(12) RED MITCHEL
Love You Madly(1988)
1968年から長期にわたってスウェーデンに居を移し、これも現地にクラーク テリーを迎えてのデュオ録音。アルバムの約半数5曲がデューク・エリントンの作で、自作の詞をつけて彼に敬意を表しクラークも最後でハモります。
選曲された「Love You Madly」についても音源の代替として下記を添付します。

(13)LIONEL HAMPTON
RCAビクターは 1937年から4年間、ハンプトンにニューヨーク滞在中は自由に使ってくれと録音スタジオを開放していたそうです。その初期にあたるこの曲はバスター・ベイリー(cl)、ジョニー・ホッジス(as)、コジー・コール (d)らをバックに気持ちよく、そして後年に比べ極めて真摯に歌っています。

(14) MILT JACKSON
全曲歌入りのアルバムもある無類の歌いたがり屋さん。ビリー・ホリデーや シナトラの歌唱で知られる「アイム・ア・フール・トゥ・ウォント・ユー」まであるのですが、パリでエンリコ・イントラ・グループと歌ったこの曲を。契約の関係か、ヴァイブを叩かず、歌に徹しています。ピアノは彼かも…。

以上 14 曲、「楽器で歌う」ことに専念する多くのミュージシャンには失礼な企画ではありましたが、1曲でも気に入ってもらえる物があったなら幸いです。

Bobby Jaspar had many recordings in US and Eurrope.

From 1961 to 1962 he came back for one year to Europe giving many concerts in several countries, and making some of his last recordings.

Unfortunately he passed away by complications following an open-heart surgery operation.

He died in New York on Feb. 28, 1963, he was 37 years old.

Finally, I will  briefly introduce a few representative recordings of Bobby Jaspar.

Bobby Jasparはアメリカだけでなくヨーロッパでも多くのレコーディングを行なっています。

1961年から1962年ヨーロッパ各国で行なったコンサートが彼の最後レコーデイングになっています。

帰国後、心臓発作後の心臓バイパス手術時(1963年2月28日)の合併症で容態が悪化し、1963年3月4日、享年37歳で早逝しました。

最後に、簡単にBobby Jasparの代表的なアルバムを紹介して今回の投稿を終わりたいと思います。

SJ Jazz Workshopの最終回ではニューポート・ジャズ・フェスティバル「1966年と1970年」が上映されました。このフィルムにはジョン・コルトレーンの演奏が撮影されていました。中平氏は日本で初めての海外ジャズツアーに参加し貴重な演奏を撮影することが出来ました。帰国後、中平氏はジャズ喫茶 “Dig”で貴重な映像をファンに公開しました。
その後、全国のジャズ喫茶のオーナーから貴重なフィルムを借りたいという申し出があったそうです。
フィルムを貸すことが出来ないことから、彼は自分の映写機を携えて北海道から九州までジャズ喫茶を廻ったということです。又、このフィルムには当然ながら音声は入っておらず、インパルスのコルトレーンのレコードをバックグラウンドミュージックとして上映されたそうです。尚、このツアーの参加者は彼と故内田修氏と故野口伊織氏の3人だけだったそうです。

SJ Jazz Workshop ended with the 14th ”Improvisation and Collision”.

It was held July 3,1971.

Kikuchi(菊地雅章) and his members played Part 1 and 2 on the day.

I want post about the third part of last workshop.

The third part had been presented “Newport Film” by Hozumi Nakadaira(中平穂積) .

Mr.Nakadaira had photographed the Newport Jazz Festival”1966 and 1970”.

The 1966 festival was John Coltrane’s last performance.

A travel agency was recruiting a tour of the Newport Jazz Festival in 1966.

He wanted to see John Coltrane by all means.

In those days Japanese could not go abroad.

So he decided to join the tour.

Unfortunately the tour partícipant was only three people including him.

The remaining two people were Osamu Uchida(内田修) and Iori Noguchi(野口伊織).

He photographed John Coltrane’s performance by 8-mm color film.

Also he shot Kenny Burrel and Dexter Gordon and others.

After returning he was frequently showing his invaluable film at Jazz Cafe “Dig”.

Interesting he provided “Live at the Village Vanguard” as background music because it was “unvoiced film”.

Then owners of jazz cafes all over the country wanted to see his valuable films.

They said they wanted him to lend the film.

However there was no reproduction of film at that time.

So he carried his machine and was showing his film from Hokkaido to Kyushu.

This piece is not a song made famous adopted by musical.

George Shearing was spread this song in NY jazz scene.

When he appeared on jazz club in St.Louis, he liked this song and took home-recording to tape completely

He let this song to his fellow, Jackie & Roy and Bob Dorough were in addition to their repertoire.

Please hear from Jackie & Roy.

 

Please listen to two female singer.

 I think this is the best in the male singer.

 

Listening in the guitar solo is feel good for me.

Of course the last performer is Ella Fitzgerald.
