神戸ジャズサロン8月例会「バリトンサックスの名演」番外編

◆変わりダネの魅力
ブルーベックとＭＪＱにハマり、執念深く音源を追う中でも、生来の新しい物好き、ゲテモノ趣味を交えていろいろ浮気しました。そんな昭和30 (1955) 年前後の変わりダネをお聴きください。名盤と言い切る自信は無いのですが、私にとっての”隠れヒーロー”による”隠れ名演”ではあります。

1.『 Pretty Just For You』ジミー・スミス(Jimmy Smith))(Blue Note盤)

今はない神戸・元町のヤマハで売れ残っていたLPを買い「ブクブク、ボコボコ」と鳴るオルガンジャズの楽しさに覚醒。それは片面２曲で各10分超の長尺なので、次に買ったこれを。

2.「The Things We Did Last Summer」ハービー・マン(Herbie Mann)（Bethlehem盤）

大阪・千林のレコード店で買った東芝レーベルEP（4曲）のうち表面の2曲目。後に全11曲の12インチLPで再発。ハービーがどんどん変な方向に走ったので追跡は断念。

3.『Man Bites Harmonica』ツーツ・シールマンス(Toots Thielmans)(Riverside盤)
実は、ハマったのは彼が晩年になってから。フランスムードや、ラテン物を楽しみ、ジョージ・シェアリング５加入前の Jean 名義のこれにも行きつきました。2006年に大阪ビルボードへ聴きに行き、休み時間にCDを差し出すと上機嫌でサインをしてくれました。

In 1951 Toots Thielemans  immigrated to the United States.

He worked with Charlie Parker, Dick Hyman and many other musicians.

From 1953 to 1959 he played with George Shearing.

When  George Shearing signed with Capitol, they recorded together on most of Shearing’s Capitol sessions.

Also Thielemans was making a name for himself as a leader.

In 1957, he signed with Riverside label.

Orrin Keepnews produced an ingenious pairing by Thielemans and  baritone saxophonist Pepper Adams.

Thielemans and Adams had swing and a driving playing style in common.

Then Thielemans recorded most superb 1950s albums—Time Out for Toots, on Decca.

Unfortunately I could not hear his guitar on this recordings.

Probably it seems that guitar solos in this album are Barry Galbraith  and Johnny Pizzarelli.

In 1959 he recorded with Ray Bryant Trio on Signature label.

 

1951年、Toots Thielemans は米国に移住しすぐにCharlie Parkerや Dick Hyman等と共演しています。

1953年から1959年までGeorge Shearingのグループに参加しました。

George Shearingが MGM社からCapitol社に移籍契約してからはShearingバンドのギター奏者として多くのレコーディングを残しています。

又同時期にThielemansはリーダーアルバムもレコーディングしています。

1957年ThielemansはOrrin Keepnews率いるRiverside社と契約を締結しました。

Orrin KeepnewsはThielemansとバリトンサックス奏者Pepper Adamsを組み合わせるという独創的なアイデアで「Man Bites Harmonica！」を制作しました。

ThielemansとAdamsの演奏スタイルには共通したところがあったようです。

その後、1950年代の代表作である「Time Out for Toots」をDecca社にレコーディングしています。

残念ながらこのアルバムにおいて、私の耳ではThielemansと共演者のギターを識別することが出来ませんでした。(Thielemansはハーモニカソロに専念しているのでしょうか)
このアルバムのギターソロはBarry GalbraithとJohnny”Bucky” Pizzarelli が担当しているのではないかと思われます。(ディスコグラフィーを参照しました)

1959年、Ray Bryant TrioをバックにSignature社に「The Soul Of Toots」をレコーディングしています。
