I’ve got the world in a jug,
The stopper’s in my hand.

は黒人ブルースの慣用句。直訳すれば「壺の中に世界をもち、手でその蓋を押えている」である。モズレー氏によれば 「瓶の中に船をみたことがありますか? それと同じで彼女は壺の中に美しい生のよろこびにみちた世界をもち、よい男性だけのためにその蓋を開いてくれるのです」とのことであった。

これがベシーの初吹きこみである。 既に各社から色んな歌手が歌ったものが出て、特に作者アルバータ・ハンターのパラマラント盤はベストセラーになっていた。それだけにベシーは緊張し、5枚のテークをとってはじめて満足したという。ジョージ・ホーファーはこのレコードが78万枚も売れた原因を“I’ve got the world in a jug……” のコーラスに於けるベシーの解釈が卓抜な点にあったとしている(ジャズ・ メーカー P.133引用)。

Cliff Edwards(クリフ・エドワーズ)はウクレレ奏者兼歌手としてデビューし、1929年に”Singin ‘in the Rain”をヒットさせ後年「ピノキオ」の挿入歌『星に願いを』で歴史に残る歌手となっています。

過去に下記のブログを投稿した時にFB友人長谷川光氏からCliff Edwardsの名前を教えて頂きました。

今回は昨日の投稿でお約束しましたEddie Lang(エディ・ラング)と共演した録音にお付き合い下さい。

ブログを作成するにあたりRed Nicholsの演奏を繰り返し聞きましたが小編成時の録音が印象に残りました。

1926年、Red NicholsとEddie Langはピアノとドラムをバックに素晴らしい録音を行いました。

ギターは詳しくありませんので「多言を弄する」ことは避けることにします。

Eddie Langについては「ジャズ1920年代」(リチャード・ハドロック著)を参照しました。(262ページから279ページ)

最初の曲(3月録音)は「The Red Heads」ではなく「We Three」というグループ名で録音されました。

次にスウェーデンを代表するサックス奏者(Arne Domnerus)アルネ・ドムネラスの名演(名曲)をご紹介しました。

Quincy Jones(クインシー・ジョーンズ)の編曲が素晴らしいです。

やっぱりこの曲はArne Domnerusの方が良いと思います。(個人的感想です)

寺本氏(世話人)のご配慮でNHKFM放送の一部を聞いて頂きました。
瀬谷さん宅に訪問されたY瀬氏並びにMusicraft(大阪)でのSPコンサートに参加されたTさんにも喜んで頂けたようです。又、大阪ジャズ同好会で新譜紹介されているFさんから「最終回のフレディー・グリーンを聞くのが楽しみです」と言われました。3月の放送を聞かれた会員の方が少なく例会の場でご紹介出来てよかったと思っております。

今回は番組のエンディング曲を添付しました。
本当は特例でCメロディーサックスを例会でご紹介したかったです。

Jazz violinist(5)〜Joe Venuti

Four violinists were famous in the 20’s to 30’s,Stephan Grappelli, Joe Venuti, Eddie South, Stuff Smith.

Three people except Stephane Grappelli are Americans.

Joe Venuti was an immigrant from Italy.

He played lightly from salon style to aggressive solos, based on classical techniques.

He pioneered the use of string instruments in jazz along with the guitarist Eddie Lang, a friend since childhood.

He became extremely popular in New York in the the late 1920s and early 1930s.

He worked with Benny Goodman, Adrian Rollini, the Dorsey Brothers, Bing Crosby, Bix Beiderbecke, Jack Teagarden and others.

Unfortunately, after Eddie Lang’s death in 1933, Venuti’s career began to wane.

However by the violin’s revival boom of the 1960s he was reevaluated.

He recorded many albums until his death in 1978, and he was active in lifelong.

Whereas Grappelli was playing which was conscious of soft tone,Venuti’s improvisation was played at the center of treble.

His timbre is totally solid, and it gets a very sharp impression with a tight attack.

He suffered from alcoholism in his middle age, throughout the 1950s and early 1960s.

He died on August 14, 1978 in Seattle.
