今回は参加者持ち寄り『１９６０年代のジャズ』の2回目です。

1961年に録音されたドリス・デイとアンドレ・プレヴィントリオによる「DUET」とドリス・デイの追悼として「MY HEART」も併せてご紹介されました。以下、当日配付された案内を修正せず転載します。

ドリス・デイとアンドレ・プレヴィン、そしてテリー・メルチャーのこと
2019年6月の持ち寄りテーマ「1860年代ジャズ」で、ドリス・デイを紹介したい・・・と考 えました。18歳だった1940年、レスブラウン楽団の専属歌手として芸能界デビューし た彼女ですが、早々にトロンボーン奏者のアル・ジョーダンと結婚して妊娠。中絶要求を 拒んで愛息テリーを産んだものの家庭内暴力に悩み2年で離婚。46年の再婚もわずか8カ月で破局した後、3度目の夫で代理人マーティイン・メルチャーの尽力もありワーナー映画 のオーディションをパスし、その主題歌を含めて映画の世界で大成功を納めていきます。
そんな彼女が、ウエストコースト系のジャズピアニストとしてスタートし、同じハリウッドのMGM映画で音楽監督をしていたアンドレ・プレヴィンとコロンビアレコードのスタジオで出会ったのが1861年。彼は後にクラシックの世界でも世界各地の交響楽団の指揮者や監督を務めた人物です。共にジャズに飢えていた2人が、化学反応を起こして吹き込んだのが「DUET」です。ドリスとプレヴィン・トリオ(レッド・ミッッチェルb、フランク・ キャップds)にとって、ジャズマインドに満ちたまさに奇跡の1枚になりました。

プレヴィンは今年2月28日、90歳を目前に亡くなっていたことを知り、その追悼にもなるかと思ったのですが、ドリスは2004年に先立った愛息テリー(メルチャー姓に改名)のため、(歌いたくて歌った)新旧のお気に入り音源による新作「MY HEART」を2011年に発表。この中でテリー作の表題曲を労苦を共にしたbuddy(相棒・同志) へのメッセージを語るなど、なお健在だったのですが、残念ながら今年5月13日に97 歳で逝去。これまた追悼盤ということになってしまいました。ちなみに、先ほどの②は、 この「MY HEART」にも収録されており、ドリスの愛着ぶりがしのばれます。

1960年代は、前衛ジャズの台頭、ビートルズ旋風、ボサノバや電化サウンドの流行などで、主流派ジャズが翻弄された時代でした。マイルス・デヴィスとジョン・コルトレー ンが時代を席巻したように思います。ここでは、伝統を守り、頑張っていた中間派ジャズを紹介します。

シカゴ派のオールスターズが、一堂に会してのニューポートジャズフェスティバルでの演奏です。
②「Swinging at the Coppers ‘Rail」(May.2 .1961)
1960年代初頭のバッククレイトン・オールスターズの欧州ツアーの演奏です。私の一番好きなジャズです。
③「Autumn Leaves」(Apr.29.1967)
ドン・バイアスの晩年のドイツで行われたライヴ演奏です。

Isham Jones’ compositions(3) “I’ll See You in My Dreams”

“I’ll See You in My Dreams” was written by Isham Jones, with lyrics by Gus Kahn, and was published in 1924.

Then ”I’ll See You in My Dreams” became the title of a movie based on Gus Kahn’s life.

Also Doris Days acted as Kahn’s wife.

I heard this song for the first time in her singing.

「I’ll See You in My Dreams」は Isham Jones作曲、Gus Kahn作詞で1924年に発表されました。

その後「I’ll See You in My Dreams」の作詞家Gus Kahnを描いた伝記映画のタイトルになりました。

この映画でDoris DaysはGus Kahnの妻の役を演じています。

私はこの曲をDoris Daysの歌唱で知りました。
