The early Kai Winding(5)

July 13.2017

Finally, I would like to write about forming a double-headed group with J.J.Johnson.

In early 1946, he began appearing on 52nd Street with the small circle of bebop innovators.

In June ’46, after several years of recording as a big band sideman, he made his first session as a leader.

Unfortunately he lost his cabaret card – the New York musician’s indispensable passport to employment.  The revocation of his card meant the loss of his ability to work in the city’s nightclubs.

Then he was invited by Miles Davis and Gil Evans to participate in the nonet sessions,”Birth of the Cool”.

By this time, Johnson had established his reputation as the preeminent trombonist in modern jazz.

Also Kai Winding was always to an extent overshadowed by J.J. Johnson

In those days the trombone was considered an unusual instrument to lead a combo.

In 1954, producer Ozzie Cadena proposed the marriage of two trombones “ .

Photo above of Ozzie Cadena

The session of Winding and Johnson was Cadena’s first session as a producer for Savoy.

I posted about Ozzie Cadena last year.Go here

So the two leaders became a hugely popular club attraction and critical favorite.

The early Kai Winding(4)

July 11.2017

Kai Winding participated in some early bebop sessions such as Tadd Dameron’s recordings, and also recorded his leader sessions.

Today I will introduce his leader’s recordings from in 1946 to in 1953.

In January 1946 Kai and Stan Getz had recordings on Savoy label as “Kai’s Krazy Kats”.

Recently these recordings reissued by Mosaic label as “Classic Savoy Be-Bop Sessions 1945-49.”

In April 1949 Kai and Gerry Mulligan with George Wallington recorded  four tunes on Roost label.

They adopted “Wallington’s Godchild” by George Wallington.

It was first performed by Miles Davis and His Orchestra in 1948 and was recorded “Birth of the Cool” by Miles Davis.

In May 1951 Kai and Brew Moore recorded again at Roost label.

We can hear these four tunes on Youtube, which are added previous Roost recordings(1949).

In March 1952 Kai recorded again four tunes at Savoy label.

As a matter of course these recordings are not included “Classic Savoy Be-Bop Sessions 1945-49”.

In June 1953 Kai and Howard McGhee “Kai Winding and his Birdlanders” cut four tunes  at MGM label.

Miles Davis and his Orchestraによって初めて演奏され「Birth of the Cool」の中で再演されています。

Lou Stein(p), and Eddie Safranski(b), Tiny Kahn(ds), Al Young(bgs,timbales)

1953年6月Kai Windingは「Kai Winding and his Birdlanders」という名前で Howard McGheeと共演しています。

Coleman Hawkins at Aladdin label

July 5.2017

Photo above by courtesy of 45 worlds

Last week I posted about Lester Young’s recordings on Philo label.

Also I mentioned about Coleman Hawkins.

Today I would like to post about Coleman Hawkins’ recordings in Aladdin label.

Coleman Hawkins made smooth transitions into bebop and cool jazz in the 40’s.

He always had a keen ear for new talent and styles.

Photo by courtesy of New York Neon:Postcards

So he led a combo at Kelly’s Stables on Manhattan’s 52nd Street and had been the first ever bebop recording session in 1944 with Dizzy Gillespie, Oscar Pettiford and Max Roach.

Although my writing will turn off from main theme, there is an interesting stoty.

He was the only leader to hire Thelonious Monk for a session at Kelly’s Stables.

Thelonious Monk’s first known recording was made in 1944 with Coleman Hawkins.

Returning to main theme,in those days the name of Philo label was changed to Aladdin.

He had recorded in Aladdin label in June 1947.

Interestingly Miles Davis joined this recordings in New York.

This recordings clearly reflected Hawk’s commitment to the new sounds.

Coleman Hawkins and Miles Davis, Three Deuces, New York, 1947, by William P. Gottlieb

Miles Davis

The Jazz Workshop in San Francisco was located on Broadway between Columbus and Montgomery.

Between 1961 and 1964, numerous  “Live at the Jazz Workshop” albums were produced.

These performances featured artists such as James Moody, Barry Harris, Cannonball Adderley, Charlie Mingus, and Thelonius Monk.

I found an interesting article at Cannonball Adderley’s live.

I quoted “When Bebop Filled the Night(Historical Essay)” by Art Peterson

Russian composer Dimitri Shostakovich was in the audience for his first experience with American jazz.He made no comment, smiled appreciatively several times and applauded vigorously on occasion.

Also Lenny Bruce was infamously arrested here during his performance at the Jazz Workshop In October 1961.

In 1964 Miles Davis was supposed to play a two-week gig at the Workshop.

The drummer was 18-year-old Tony Williams.

In those days California law did not allow minors in clubs that served liquor.

So the workshop’s owner suspended his liquor license for the length of the engagement, charged a $2 door charge and served soft drinks.

On broadcast Sadao Watanabe(渡辺貞夫)  choised two tunes,“Cool Blues and Laura” from “Bird in Boston by Charlie Parker.”

The performances were recorded at the Hi-Hat Club in Boston.

Sadao said that he didn’t know the Hi-Hat Club.

Because it closed in March of 1959 after a fire destroyed the building.

bird-in-boston-live-at-the-hi-hat-1953-1954-2-cd

The Hi-Hat Club had been opened among the jazz clubs of Boston s South End district, at the corner of Columbus and Massachusetts Avenue.

Performers included Sammy Davis Jr, Duke Ellington, BB King, Sonny Stitt, Miles Davis, Billie Holliday, and many others.

It prospered from the mid 1940s until 1959.

mi0002459931

In those days it was the only club featuring a consistent policy of presenting modern jazz.

Between 1953 and 1954 Charlie Parker made several visits to Boston.

He had played often with local musicians at the Hi-Hat.

The Great Compositions by Tadd Dameron(5)

Nat Hentoff died on on Jan. 7 at his home in Manhattan. He was 91.Go here

I will post about “Mating Call” from the consideration of Nat Hentoff.

I referred to JazzWax[August 21, 2007].

He wrote a review about “Mating Call” in 1957.

“Why a trumpet wasn’t added remains a mystery”.

Hentoff wished there had been an extra horn on the date, and he mused “a gentler trumpet”.

This recording had been subject to discussion among critics as Ira Gitler points out in the liner notes.

ablue_note_1500_079

After the death of Clifford Brown in June 1956, Blue Note label was recording more aggressive sound with joining young superior trumpeters such as Lee Morgan and Donald Byrd.

Also Bob Weinstock produced Miles Davis for a marathon recording session at the end of November 1956.

Producer Bob Weinstock had envisioned the date as a quintet session including trumpeter.

However Tadd Dameron had rejected Weinstock’s plan.

I guess Tadd wanted to record without trumpeter.

After all this session was recorded without a trumpet player.

Arranging with one horn alone was marvelous.
