タイリー・グレンというトロンボーン奏者を知ったのは、今は無き東芝EMIがブルーノートクラブ会員限定で出したルーレット盤の復刻紙ジャケCD「Let’s Have A Ball」でした。トミー・フラナガンらと組んだこの盤から本業トロンボーンでの演奏。

トミー・ドーシーは(1904年11月19日~1956年11月26日)は「Sentimental Gentleman」と呼ばれ、史上最も美しい音色のトロンボーンを吹くといわれていました。自身の楽団の時にはソロはバンドメンに任せ、ひたすらテーマをストレートに演奏するというスタイルで一時代を築き上げました。メンバーにはBud Freeman(ts), Bunny Berigan(tp),Ziggy Elman(tp), Buddy DeFranco(cl),Dave Tough(ds), Buddy Rich(ds)などが在団しました。

ボビー・ハケット大全集(2017年6月5日)　解説 寺本 泰規氏(同好会世話人)

ボビー・ハケットというミュージシャンをはたして何人の人がご存知でしょうか。リーダーアルバムもそれほど多いわけでもないのに、印象的なプレイを我々に残してくれました。

今日はボビー・ハケットの業績を残された数々の演奏からたどり、あらためて彼のプレイに注目してもらえれば幸いです。

さて彼のファーストレコーディングは何かということですが、それは1937年3月24日にDick Robert san & His Orchの一員として吹き込まれたものです。しかし彼が注目されるようになったのは、ベニー グッドマン・カーネギー・ホール・コンサートでジャズの歴史をたどるメドレーの中で、ビックス ・バイダーベックの名演を再現したときの演奏からだと思います。まず最初にその演奏を聴いていただきましょう。

1.「I’m Coming Virginia」(2:15)(Jan 16,1938)

ハケットはビックスに似ていると言われることもありますが、ビックスのアタック鋭いサウンドは なく、中音域を主体とした柔らかい音が特徴です。また、後で紹介するヴォーカルのバックで吹くオブリガードのうまさは彼ならではのもので正に絶品と言えるでしょう。

次はユービー・ブレイクの名曲を聴いていただきましょう。ここでは彼の特徴である中音域を生か したソロが聴かれます。
2.「Memories Of You」(3:18)(July, 12,1938)

ハケットは1941年7月から1942年9月までグレン・ミラー楽団に在団しますが、元々は欠員となってい たギター奏者として雇われます。しかしコルネット奏者としても印象的なソロを残しています。ここではその代表的なソロを聴いていただきます。

3.「A Strings Of Pearls」(3:47)(Nov 8,1941)

1946年まではリーダーセッションはあったものの、リーダーアルバムはありませんでした。 SP時代に吹き込んだ曲をLP時代(10inchs)になりまとめたのが次のアルバムで、初めてのリーダーアルバム だと思います。

さて、彼が本領を発揮するのはワンホーン・クインテットの時だと思いますが、下記の演奏は正に彼のソフトでメロウなトーンとエレガンスに満ちたフレイズが堪能できるものとなっています。

5.「What A Difference A Day Made」(3:08)(Sep 13,1950)

同じクインテットでもストリングが入るとより彼のプレイが浮かび上がるのですが、次の曲ではミ ユートプレイが日本人好みのいわゆる「泣き」が入ったものとなっています。リズムセクションにモダン派も加えたこのレコードは、キャピトル最初のリーダーアルバムとなっ ています。

6.「You Turned The Tables on Me」(2:27) (lay 11,1953)

キャピトルに移籍後、ムードミュージックで有名なジャッキー・グリースン楽団でソロイストとし てフューチャーされたアルバムを7枚ほど作りますが、それぞれ50万枚以上売り上げてゴールドディスクとなっています。その中から1曲お送ります。
7.「Yesterdays」(3:06)(1954)

彼はキャピトルレーベルにおいてグリースン楽団だけではなく、自己のグループを率いてコンボで のレコーディングを残していますが、その中からジャケットのデザインが秀逸な「Rendezvous」から 一曲選んでみました。この曲はカーク・ダグラス主演の映画「Young man with a horn」(邦題「情熱 の狂想曲」)でドリス・ディが唄う場面が印象的でした。

8.「The Very Thought Of You」(2:35)(1956)

今度はライブ演奏を聴いていただきましょう。シャンソンの名曲でジャズでも取り上げられること の多い「枯葉」です。メンバーがモダンジャズメン3名、スイング時代からのベテラン2名の合わせて 5名が何の違和感もなく、一緒にプレイしているところがジャズのすごいところだと思います。

ハケットは唄伴でもその能力を最大限に発揮します。オブリガードのうまさは他のミュージシャン と比べても特筆すべきものがありますが、特にリー・ワイリーとは1950年12月に吹き込んだ名盤「Night In Manhattan」でも既に共演しており、実に22年ぶりの共演となりました。

続いてはテレサ・ブリュワーの唄に伴奏した時のものです。そのうち2曲目の「I’ve Got A Crush On You」は先ほどの「Night In Manhattan」でもワイリーと共演しており、興味のある人は比べてみるのも一興かと思います。

先ほどのガレスピーとの共演と同じように、今度はモダンジャズの巨人ズート・シムズとの共演で す。それ以外のメンバーもモダンジャズメンで固められており、彼が如何に柔軟性のとんだプレイヤ ーであるかということを如実に示しています。モダンジャズメンの中にあっても彼の個性は決して理没することなく、しっかりと自己主張しており、彼らと対等に渡り合っています。

この特集の締めくくりとして、多分彼のラストレコーディングと思われるアルバムから1曲お送りします。このアルバムは映画、ジャズ・クラシックびスタンダードから選曲されたきわめて彼らしいアルバム作りとなっています。その中から彼の得意とするディキシースタイルで「Tin Roof Blues」 を聴いてください。

Benny Goodman in Moscow

Last week I went to a Jazz bar in Umeda in Osaka city.

The master likes Russia and I heard an interesting story about Moscow from him.

Recently I saw the documentary film when Benny Goodman visited to Moscow.

So l would like to post about Benny Goodman’s tours in Moscow.

In 1956, the US State Department created the Jazz Ambassadors program, hiring

leading American Jazz musicians such as Louis Armstrong, Dizzy Gillespie,

Benny Goodman, and Duke Ellington to be “ambassadors” for the United States overseas.

Benny Goodman was probably the world’s best-known jazz musician.

So he traveled the world as Musical Ambassador of Good Will for the United States.

In those days The Times said that some people felt Duke Ellington should have been the first American jazz band to make an official tour of Russia.

In 1962, Benny Goodman embarked on a tour of the USSR with a top-notch big band.

He assembled many superior musicians as sideman.

先週の金曜日、大阪梅田にある有名なJazz Barに行きました。(ライブ演奏は一切ありません)
マスターはロシアが大好きで、過日行かれたモスクワでの興味深いお話をお聞きしました。又、日本では珍しいウオッカも飲ませて頂きました。(写真)

最近、YoutubeでBenny Goodmanが1962年にモスクワを訪問した時に撮影されたドキュメンタリーフィルム(旧ソ連製作)を観て面白いなと思いました。
そんな訳で1962年にBenny Goodmanがモスクワを訪問したことにつ
いて投稿したいと思います。
1956年、米国国務省は有名ジャズ音楽家のよる外交推進を目的として 「The Jazz Ambassadors program」を創設しました。
Louis Armstrong, Dizzy Gillespie, Benny Goodman, Duke Ellington が「音楽親善大使」として選ばれました。
第二次世界大戦後でもBenny Goodmanは世界で最も有名なジャズミュージシャンでした。それ故、Benny Goodmanは音楽の親善大使として世界中を旅していました。
一方、政府によるソビエトへの公式ツアーがBenny Goodman楽団と決定された時、ニュース雑誌のTimesは最初に訪問すべき音楽家としてはDuke Ellingtonの方がふさわしいとの見解も示していました。
1962年に、Benny Goodmanはモスクワへのツアー準備を開始しました。
サイドマンとして多くの優れたミュージシャンが集められました。

Joe Temperley completely enthused by New York.

So he resolved to try his luck in the city, arriving in Manhattan with his wife in December 1965.

However, right after arriving in NY, there was no work of jazz for him.

He was working in a department store unwillingly.

Fortunately he was given the chance to joined the Woody Herman orchestra.

After two years he had a regular gig with the Thad Jones and Mel Lewis Jazz Orchestra every Monday at the famous Village Vanguard club.

When Harry Carney passed away  in October 1974,Joe Temperley played “Sophisticated Lady” at Harry’s funeral.

Two weeks later he was working with Mercer Ellington Bandas as Harry Carney’s replacement.

Then Joe Temperley spent ten years in the Ellington band.

In those days Wynton Marsalis took notice his performance.

しかし、ニューヨークに到着後、彼にはジャズの仕事はありませんでした。
不本意ながら百貨店で働きながらチャンスを待っていました。
幸運にもWoody Hermanオーケストラに参加し、2年間在籍しました。
又、毎週月曜日のVillage Vanguard で行われていたThad JonesとMel Lewis Jazz Orchestraとも交流していました。
1974年10月尊敬するHarry Carneyの葬儀で「Sophisticated Lady」を演奏した。
この演奏によりHarry Carneyの後任としてMercer Ellington Bandに加入した。
その後Joe Temperleyは10年間サックス部門の中心として活躍していました。
その当時、ある若手トランペッターが彼の演奏に注目していました。(Wynton Marsalis)

Their concert tour in Japan was disastrous (4)

They were the professional group that all members are respected.

However, they were saddled with a huge deficit.

Members of except two leaders returned to their country on July 22.

The wife of Sadao Watanabe saw off them in Haneda airport.

She said:Thad and Mel were crying in front of all members at airport.

Who will bear the deficit of the Japan tour?

Who would payed their traveling expenses?

There was a rumor for a few months ago that Mel Lewis was collateralized by his house for the card settlement.

July 24, Thad and Mel were sued Keiko Jones in the presence of Mr. Sakai.

Then, it was not known about the result of the complaint.

My entries(1~4) were posted the following article reference “Jazz Critic No. 9, 1971”.

I posted that their precious recording was released opportunity.

Because of sudden visiting to Japan, their concert had not been determined at all

There was the person who helped Thad and their members.
Mr.Sakai was manager of ‘Pit inn’ in Shinjyuku.

He had no acquaintance with Thad Jones.

When Elvin Jones was arrested, he took care of Elvin.

Elvin was grateful to Sakai.

There was via the above-mentioned, he decided to help them and offered to pit as a concert hall.

He provided a venue free of charge,and gave all sales to them.

Mr.Sakai and Jazz cafe owners were cooperated for concert in all-night.

Additional performance has been decided by their efforts.

Because Richard Davis returned to UA,Yoshimitu Inaba had been in charge of the bassist.

 They were scheduled to be played in Tokyo,Osaka,Kyoto,and in other town.

Manager “Keiko Jones’ said: ‘Our contract had been determined 99%.

Concert location also had been decided 100%.

But Japanese promoter had canceled the contract, May 28.”

Probably, it seems to be due to the arrest of her husband Elvin Jones.”

 

This visit to Japan had been financially bankrupt.

She had understood that their concert in Japan will generate big loss.

However, she wanted their concert held in Japan.

Thad Jones and all members cooperated to her reckless plan.

They could comprehend dedication to her husband.
